What Really Sets You Up for Success on an Appointed Person Course
Ask most candidates what makes the difference on an Appointed Person course and you will hear the same answers: years in the lifting game, being good at maths, doing well at school, or being able to write a decent method statement. All of those have a part to play. But according to trainers who have delivered Appointed Person courses to hundreds of candidates over the past decade, none of them is the biggest influence on whether someone passes or fails.
An experienced crane operator or rigger does have an advantage when it comes to selecting cranes and lifting accessories. A good manager does have an advantage in conveying information and instruction clearly. A health and safety professional does have an advantage in carrying out risk assessments and preparing method statements. A university-educated engineer does have an advantage with calculations. But do any of them have what is really needed?
The Legal Position: LOLER and Competence
Let us get the formality out of the way first. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) state that a person planning a lifting operation must be competent to do so. Codes of practice define a competent person as someone with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge and experience.
That means two things for anyone thinking about the Appointed Person role:
- You would be ill-advised to jump into planning lifting operations with cranes if you have little or no practical experience of using them. Theory alone does not make you competent in the eyes of the law.
- Very few people are competent to plan lifting operations with all types of lifting equipment. Most Appointed Persons have far more experience on one or two types than on the rest, and honest self-assessment about where your competence ends is part of the job.
Back to reality, though. In the UK construction industry, the leading card provider only recommends that candidates for the Appointed Person course have suitable experience — it does not require it. So there are plenty of people sitting the course with little or no lifting background, often put there by employers who simply need a qualified Appointed Person on the books.
You can kick and scream about that situation, but it has been that way for some time and there is no sign of it changing. Which means it falls to the candidate to arrive as informed and prepared as possible. The Two Factors That Actually Decide It
So what are the biggest factors in someone being successful on the course? Two things:
- Attention to detail
- The ability to think in a logical and systematic manner
That is it. Not the maths degree, not the twenty years on the hook. Those two habits.

The old proverb applies to lifting plans just as it does to joinery. Consider how small the failure points are on an Appointed Person test:
- An incorrect button unknowingly pressed on a calculator
- A line drawn to scale a couple of metres — one centimetre if you are drawing at 1:200 — longer than it should be
- A dimension misread from a crane diagram
- A load weight entered on the method statement that differs from the figure you actually calculated
Every one of these is a simple mistake. Every one of them could be rectified at the time of the error through closer attention to detail — by checking twice, by measuring twice.
There is a story worth remembering here. A trainer marking Appointed Person tests recalls one candidate who finished and handed in his work after around four hours 15 minutes of the permitted six hours 45 minutes — two and a half hours early. Asked whether he was sure he was finished, he confidently confirmed he was. The main error that resulted in him failing the test was down to lack of attention to detail. It was an error he would very likely have spotted had he used the time available to check his work before submitting it.
Frustrating does not begin to cover it. And think about the potential consequences to safety — and indeed to cost — if those same simple mistakes were made when planning a real lifting operation rather than a test scenario. This is why precision is so critical in planning.
The good news is that, like so many other skills, attention to detail can be honed. Check, check, and check again.

So many things to do. So much to consider. Lots to remember. Overwhelm happens to the best of us. Your mind keeps throwing things at you, each new item apparently as important as — or more important than — the last. Until you decide what the most important thing to do right now is, you will keep being distracted by whatever pops into your head next.
How do you stay focused on the most important thing? Systems.
A system is a logical process in place to achieve a desired outcome, and usually that means dealing with one thing at a time. Think of juggling. Throw several balls in the air simultaneously and try to catch them — you will likely catch one, maybe two if you are quick at switching focus and a bit lucky. The rest hit the floor. Throw one ball at a time and you catch them all, in the order you chose to throw them.
Having a good system for planning lifting operations will exponentially increase your chance of doing so successfully. That is, if you choose to follow it.
A workable planning system for a lifting operation generally runs through:
- Establish the load — weight, dimensions, centre of gravity, lifting points
- Establish the environment — ground conditions, overhead services, exclusion zones, proximity hazards
- Select the crane and configuration — radius, duty chart, gross capacity versus net capacity
- Select lifting accessories — slings, shackles, beams, angles and their effect on sling loading
- Calculate and cross-check — every figure verified twice, using the same units throughout
- Produce the drawing and documentation — site plan to scale, method statement, risk assessment
- Review the whole package against itself — does the method statement match the calculations, and does the drawing match both?
Step seven is the one candidates skip when the clock is running down. It is also the one that catches most of the errors listed earlier.

It takes discipline to follow a system. It takes discipline to focus on the most important thing right now rather than succumbing to the ever-present busyness of the mind. So what do you choose — the discipline to create and follow a system, or the tons of regret that may end up weighing heavier than any load you plan to lift?
The Appointed Person role is not like operating a machine, where a mistake is often immediately visible and correctable. A planning error can sit quietly in a document until the day of the lift, when it becomes very visible indeed. That is why the discipline of checking is not bureaucratic box-ticking — it is the control measure.

Practical Preparation Before the Course
- Get near the equipment. If you have limited crane exposure, spend time on site observing lifts, talking to the crane supervisor, and asking the slinger signaller how the lift was planned.
- Practise reading duty charts. Being fluent with a crane’s load chart — radius, boom length, configuration, deductions — removes a large source of error under exam pressure.
- Work in consistent units. Mixing tonnes and kilograms, or metres and millimetres, is one of the most common causes of a wrong answer that looks plausible.
- Practise scale drawing. Get comfortable with 1:100, 1:200, and 1:500 before the course. Know what one centimetre represents in each.
- Build the checking habit now. Whatever you calculate, calculate it a second time by a different route. If both agree, move on. If they do not, you have just saved yourself a failure.
- Use the full time on test day. The six hours 45 minutes is not a target to beat. It is there so you can review.
