CITB GE700 — Construction Site Safety: The Comprehensive Guide (2020)
The CITB's flagship 1,100-page H&S manual and the official text for the Site Managers Safety Training Scheme. Six lettered sections (A–F) cover legislation, risk, plant, work-at-height, services and welfare in the depth a CPCS renewal candidate or supervisor needs.
Why we recommend it: Universal coverage that maps onto our Health & Wellbeing module (HAVS, noise at work, dust/silica) and the People-Plant Interface module on segregation and exclusion zones — the same legislation cited in our blog post on safety attitudes at work.
HSE L113 — Safe Use of Lifting Equipment (LOLER 1998 Approved Code of Practice)
The HSE-approved Code of Practice that sets out how to comply with LOLER 1998. Defines the appointed person, crane supervisor and competent person roles, thorough examination intervals and the planning duties for every lift.
Why we recommend it: The legal backbone of our Lifting Operations module and all four lifting calculators — Sling Angle, Load Weight, Wind Speed Converter and Lift Radius Planner. The same regulation our BS 7121 hand-signal and SWL reference cards trace back to.
Excavator Operator Handbook: Advanced Techniques for Operators (Reiner Christian)
An illustrated field guide for 360° and 180° excavator operators. Bucket selection, slew safety, trench-edge stand-off, blind-spot awareness and the techniques that separate a trained ticket-holder from a competent operator.
Why we recommend it: Reads alongside our Earth Moving module (categories A09/A12/A31/A56) and the 360 excavator training walk-through on the blog. The trench-edge distances it teaches are the exact ones our Trench Proximity Calculator quantifies per HSG47.

Portwest C470 Hi-Vis Band & Brace Vest, Yellow (EN ISO 20471 Class 2)
Class 2 high-visibility vest with reflective band-and-brace tape pattern. The volume seller across UK construction sites and the minimum visibility standard for working in or near moving plant.
Why we recommend it: Class 2 is the visibility floor for the segregation rules in our People-Plant Interface module — the same conspicuity standard the slinger/signaller in our Lifting Operations module relies on to be seen by the operator at radius.
3M Peltor X5A Headband Ear Defenders, SNR 37 dB
The highest-attenuation passive defender in 3M's Peltor range — Class 5, SNR 37 dB. Twin-cup design, low-profile headband, and the rating needed for open-station and high-noise plant work.
Why we recommend it: Dialled in for the 85 dB(A) upper exposure action value our Health & Wellbeing module's Noise section covers. The same protection level you should be wearing for breaker and crusher work on the Demolition module.
Portwest A790 Anti-Vibration Gloves (EN ISO 10819)
Chloroprene rubber anti-vibration pods on the palm, certified to EN ISO 10819 with measured vibration reduction. Cut/abrasion-rated to EN 388 4142X and a breathable seamless liner for shift-long wear.
Why we recommend it: The PPE half of the HAVS controls in our Health & Wellbeing module — the other half being exposure-time management against the 2.5 m/s² A(8) action value. Wear them on breakers, pokers, plate compactors and the smaller hand-tool work the renewal test asks about.

Why we recommend it: FFP3 is the level required for RCS exposure under our Health & Wellbeing module's Dust and Respiratory Hazards section and the dust-suppression controls on the Demolition module. Anything less leaves you on the slow road to silicosis.
